Itinerary & Destination Background:

Day 1:

Depart Sydney by luxury private vehicle for a three-hour touring transfer across the Blue Mountains, or alternatively, take a 50-minute scenic helicopter ride.   After settling in, your Field Guide will take you on a journey around the property in one of their luxury four-wheel drive vehicles or purpose built safari vehicles.  You will get your first glimpses of kangaroos, wallabies, and wallaroos grazing throughout the valley and the tree line of the Wollemi and Gardens of Stone National Parks that surround this unique property.  The valley is also home to prolific birdlife, wombats and reptiles.  As you travel through the valley you will witness the changing colors of the towering escarpments and marvel at the 250 million year old sandstone formations giving a profound sense of time and perspective.  The tour concludes with Canapés accompanied by a glass of sparkling wine and refreshments bringing the day to a close, as you watch the sun disappear over the horizon.  Enjoy a 5-course dinner at leisure in Wolgan Dining Room.

Accommodations: Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort

Day 2:

Enjoy a lazy breakfast in the privacy of your suite.  Greet the day from choosing from the resort’s range of nature-based activities.  One of our favorite is retracing ancient footsteps and immersing yourself in Aboriginal culture, while your Field Guide gives you an insight into the typical day in the life of an Aboriginal person through the centuries.  During your hike, you will gain an understanding of how the seasons governed the hunting and gathering of animal and plant species along with the medicinal uses of native plants; and how through ancient land management practices, the conservation of natural resources for future generations was ensured.

Accommodations:  Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort

Day 3:

Indulge in a treatment in the Timeless Spa, play a game of tennis, enjoy the sauna and steam room or just relax and enjoy your private suite and swimming pool.   That evening explore the nocturnal world of the Australian bush, where the wildlife is at its most active, as your Field Guide drives you out into the reserve in a luxury four-wheel drive after an early dinner.  Spotlighting is a typically Australian occupation and torchlight reveals the flashing eyes of sleepy possums, grazing wombats, wallaroos and wallabies along with a host of other creatures.  You will then be taken to a quiet, remote part of the Valley, where the magnificence of the Southern sky spreads out all around and on a clear night, constellations such as Australia’s famous Southern Cross can be seen.

Accommodations:   Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort

Day 4:

Depart Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort by 4WD to Lithgow Train Station to board your rail car on the Indian Pacific Platinum Service Cabin - Lithgow to Adelaide.  Australia has some of the most spectacular and unforgettable rail journeys in the world and the Indian Pacific is truly the leading star.    Once on board, you set your own pace as you journey through the stunning Blue Mountains.  Spend a lazy evening with a good book as the landscape rolls by, or maybe meet, greet and swap stories with your fellow travelers in the Outback Explorer Lounge.  From the moment you step on board you will be treated to the highest standard of luxury rail travel available in Australia.  There is no better way to immerse yourself in the timeless natural beauty of this great southern land than through the window of your private cabin.

Accommodations:  Indian Pacific Platinum Service Cabin

Day 5:

In the morning arrive at Broken Hill, you will have a brief time to discover a little more about this city’s history as a major producer of silver, lead and zinc since 1883 with its countless tales of riches won and lost.   And be wonderfully surprised as this stop is also an unexpected home of an impressive line-up of artists including Claude Monet.  Depart Broken Hill to arrive in Adelaide at mid-afternoon to connect with your flight to Kangaroo Island where you will be transferred to Southern Ocean Lodge

Accommodations:  Southern Ocean Lodge

Day 6:

Widely acclaimed as Australia’s Galapagos, Kangaroo Island is home to an abundance of native wildlife and spectacular natural attractions.  Covering almost 4,500 square kilometers, it is Australia’s third largest island and offers the best of the mainland on a smaller, more intimate scale.  With more than one third of the island declared as Conservation or National Park, visitors readily come face-to-face with prolific bird and animal species such as New Zealand fur seals, koalas, kangaroos, Australian sea lions, ospreys, echidnas and much, much more.  Flanked by the indomitable Southern Ocean, dramatic coastal vistas and sculptured landscapes lay unspoiled by development and riddled with sheer limestone cliffs, sheltered coves, rocky headlands and deserted stretches of sugar-white sand. Use the morning to relax and take in the dramatic vistas.  In the afternoon, venture out on a Coastal Clifftop Trek, starting right on the Lodge doorstep atop the limestone cliffs of Hanson Bay.  This easy walk affords a bird’s eye view of thundering waves crashing along the coastline.  Stand on top of the cliff with the wind blowing, look out to sea and realize there is nothing but ocean between here and Antarctica.  Experience and learn about local flora, fauna and coastline ecosystems.  Tip – A photographers dream!

Accommodations:  Southern Ocean Lodge

Day 7:

The Lodge offers a range of easy to medium grade treks for avid bushwalkers to enjoy and there is a hike scheduled each morning.  Alternatively, you may choose to sleep in and pamper yourself with a treatment at the Southern Spa.  In the afternoon, visit Seal Bay, the home to Australia’s third largest colony of Australian sea lions.  Join our naturalist guide for an exclusive tour on the beach with these wild animals.  End the day with Kangaroos & Kanapes, soaking up the history of the early island settlers at Grassdale, a historic island property reached by a short drive from the Lodge and where local wildlife including kangaroos and wallabies congregate to graze.  Observe these creatures in their natural environment, sip on premium South Australian beverages and nibble on a canapé whilst the sun goes down on another magical day.

Accommodations:  Southern Ocean Lodge

Day 8:

Recount your experience over breakfast overlooking the cinematic vistas of Hanson Bay.  Transfer for your departure home.
