Family friendly wine estates in Constantia and Hermanus
South Africa boasts the longest wine route in the world; and The Collection by Liz McGrath just so happens to have two hotels, The Marine and The Cellars-Hohenort, situated in some of its most beautiful wine regions: the Constantia Valley and the Hemel-en-Aarde.
Will you be wine-tasting with the kids in tow? We’ve rounded up our favorite family-friendly wineries in both areas.
Here the little ones can have fun and learn something at the same time. The historic estate was founded in 1685 and offers a gracious glimpse into the valley’s past with an on-site museum and restored manor house. Once they tire of learning, they can run to their heart’s content on the sprawling green lawns, shaded by towering oaks. The wine-tasting facility is large and family-friendly too.
This is another historic estate that boasts rambling green lawns, plus you can have a picnic set up under one of the many trees. The picnics are served in baskets and tables and chairs are provided. You won’t need to budge an inch to enjoy the wines, food, and indeed to watch your children playing.
In the mood for somewhere off the beaten track? Then Eagle’s Nest is just the thing. Situated on a secluded outcrop, the estate offers just three wines, though all are superb. Like Buitenverwachting Estate, they also offer picnics on their lush green lawns. Plus the kiddies can learn all about the Western Cape Raptor Research Program, which Eagles Nest supports in their endeavors to conserve the last remaining nest of Verreaux eagles.
Find this urban winery at the foot of the Hemel en Aarde valley. In place of sprawling green lawns, there is an enclosed courtyard with a fountain running through it. Parents can wine taste in peace knowing their kids are safe behind high walls. Plus on Saturdays they host a morning food and wine market with plenty of wine and gourmet goods on-hand.
Set in the stunning heart of the Hemel-en-Aarde, this wine estate is aptly named, relax on the deck and soak up the phenomenal views while wine-tasting. Bring the kids and join in on a vineyard safari where a guide will lead you through information about the area’s fynbos and birdlife.
