The Best of South Africa on Horseback

This ten day excursion to South Africa is the perfect destination for your next riding holiday. Once you arrive in Cape Town, guests can spend the first day on property at the Ellerman House, where you can enjoy a lavish spa treatment. The Ellerman House also offers a Contemporary Art Gallery and an opportunity to taste their bottomless collection of rare vintages at their revolutionary Wine Gallery.

The second morning guests will get the chance to saddle up and ride down the pristine sands of Noordhoek Beach.  The ride includes a nice picnic break that overlooks the South Atlantic. The next few days spent in Cape Town are left for exploring. The suggested activities include a hike up Table Mountain, a visit to Robben Island, and a trip down to Boulders Beach.

On day four, guests are driven just under an hour to Franschhoek, the heart of the Cape Winelands. In the winelands experience a private visit to the Drakenstein Stud Farm.  Drakenstein is one of South Africa’s most preeminent stud farms, and home to the annual L’Ormarin’s Queen Plate.  A private tour at the farm is led by Ross Fuller, the Estates Stud Manager. After the tour, guests continue to Leeu Estates, a 168 sq acre estate and vineyard offering 5-star accommodations.

Day five starts with a gourmet breakfast that is made from locally-sourced produce and homemade granola. After breakfast, a four hour vineyard tour is given on horseback. Stops will be included along the ride at several of the regions award winning vineyards and tasting rooms.  After returning to the estates with a chance to freshen up, lunch is served at the Cavalli Wine & Stud Farm. This farm is known for its unbelievable passion for horses, wine, and food.  

On day six, the trip continues back to Cape Town.  Next on the itinerary is to catch a flight to Hoedspruit Airport where you will be transferred to the Garonga Safari Camp.  At the camp, guests will enjoy an afternoon game drive that includes a bush dinner fit for African royalty. The Garonga Camp is an exclusive 12-bed camp with a style that reflects the surroundings of the bush’s textured colors and clean lines.

 The last few days consist of two full days on the safari which can be completed on horseback. Morning rides tend to be around three to four hours depending on the weather. Once the riders return a nice homemade lunch is awaiting them. Lunch consist of homemade quiches, pizzas, pancakes, fresh homemade bread, different types of salads and greens, meats, and cheeses. After lunch, the rest of the day can be spent by the swimming pool or reading in the provided library. After taking a break, the late afternoon ride ends at the perfect location to watch the sunset. On day ten, guests can experience one last early game drive before heading back to Hoedspruit Airport to make their international departure connections from either Cape Town or Johannesburg.
