Horseback Riding Vacation in Patagonia, Chile

Experience a 4 day and 5 night horseback riding trip to the beautiful Patagonia and ride through the Torres del Paine National Park. Travel to Chile and experience this great riding program that lets you live the gaucho lifestyle.

Recommended Riding Skills: riders should be experienced in walking, trotting, and galloping on horseback for a minimum of three hours. These rides are catered to experienced riders who should feel confident riding in open spaces and also in variety situations. If you are traveling with a group or with a partner, other members of your group can chose from a number of activities from treks to easy horseback rides.

Stables: The only hotel in the area with its own horses is Hotel Salto Chico. They have bred and trained horses for the travelers to ride at explora. Some of the horses also come from the explora stud farm in central Chile and others are from Patagonia. There are a number of different breeds of horses, including Arabians, purebreds, Chilean criollo and crosses between criollos and quarter horses.

Equipment: Chilean saddles that are handmade by expert craftsmen and English saddles are the two options that are offered to riders. There is also helmets and Argentine leather chaps.

Staff: There are great bilingual guides that will join you on your horseback rides, along with a gaucho. All of the guides carry a radio and an emergency kit. They also have an advanced level Wilderness First Responder certification.

Recommended clothing
• A base layer of clothing: thick socks,
warm underwear, short or long sleeved
thermal t-shirts

overpants and jacket
• Comfortable trekking shoes or
riding boots

Arrival in Punta Arenas
• Transfer from the airport in Punta Arenas
to explora Patagonia’s Hotel Salto Chico,
which is situated in the heart of the Torres
del Paine National Park (5 hours by van).
• The explora Patagonia team will be
waiting to welcome you to the lodge and
show you to your rooms.
• In the evening you will meet our expert
guides to review and discuss the program
for the coming days.

Rincón del Puma
• Departure time: 10.00 a.m.
• Distance: 8 kilometers (5 miles).
• Duration: 1.5 hours riding.
• Itinerary: We travel from Hotel Salto
Chico to explora’s stables by van (15
minutes). The ride starts with a gentle
ascent to reach the area of Lake Toro.
During this easy, yet very attractive
horseback ride, it is possible to spot
various local bird and plant species as we
ride through the forests and prairies of
this characteristically rugged Patagonian
landscape. Splendid views of Lake Toro
and the Serrano River, crowned by the
immense peaks of the Andes Mountains.
We return to the stables, where the van
will be waiting to take us back to the
lodge (15 minutes) in time for lunch.

Río Serrano
• Departure time: 3 p.m.
• Distance: 15 kilometers (9.5 miles).
• Duration: 2 hours riding.
• Itinerary: We travel from Hotel Salto Chico
to explora’s stables by van (15 minutes).
We ride across the pampa along the
banks of the crystalline Serrano River,
with views of the snow-capped Mount
Balmaceda. We return across the pampa
through beautiful prairies with views of
the Paine Massif. We return to the lodge
by van (15 minutes)

Estancia 2 de Enero
• Departure time: 8.00 a.m.
• Distance: 18 kilometers (11 miles).
• Duration: 3 hours riding.
• Itinerary: We travel by van from Hotel
Salto Chico to explora’s quincho barbecue
area (1½ hours). We cross the Chinas
River on horseback and ride through the
pampa, past Laguna Jara Cruce to the
Estancia 2 de Enero at the foot of Mount
Obelisco. Possible sightings of condors
and eagles. Views of the Baguales Peaks
and the Paine Towers. Lunch at the
quincho barbecue area.

Estancia Santa Gemita
• Departure time: 2.30 p.m.
• Distance: 10 kilometers (6 miles).• Duration: 2 hours riding.
• Itinerary: We set off from the explora
quincho barbecue area, crossing the
Zamora River on horseback. We ride over
the nearby hills until reaching the Estancia
Santa Gemita. We return across steep
terrain and may sight condors and eagles.
Spectacular views of the Paine Towers and
Laguna Azul.
• Level: Moderate.

Icebergs – Puntilla Pehoé
• Departure time: 9.00 a.m.
• Distance: 35 kilometers (21 miles).
• Duration: 6 to 8 hours riding.
• Itinerary: We travel from Hotel Salto
Chico to explora’s stables by van (15
minutes). From there, we ride into the
northern sector of the park, ascending
a rocky path with abundant vegetation
and views of the Paine Massif and Lake
Pehoé. In the distance you can see the
Grey Glacier. After 2.5 hours riding, we
reach grasslands, where we can gallop
to a viewpoint with close-up views of the
glacier and icebergs. Against this stunning
backdrop we enjoy a picnic lunch
before setting off on the return journey,
galloping back through the grasslands.
